This past weekend I had the opportunity to model in the annual OPAL Trashion Show in Cottage Grove, Oregon. I don't do a whole lot of runway modeling but this was so fun. I feel blessed to be able to take part in experiences like these with other creatives with similar passions for environmental and social justice.
The piece I am wearing was designed by Mitra Gruwell out of discarded table cloths and food rappers to bring awareness the billions of pounds of food wasted in the U.S. each year. Meanwhile, millions face hunger in the United States, with Black and Hispanic families consistently experiencing crisis-level rates of poverty and food insecurity.
Some good ways we can all cut down on food waste and address food insecurity include:
1) composting
2) buying in bulk
3) freezing food and saving for later
4) organizing our fridge and pantries by expiration dates
5) donating spare food to charities, like @eugenecommunityfridge
6) eating the rich
